Second Place for Women’s Intermediate Four highlights BUCS Head for GUBC

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE – Glasgow University Boat Club topped off a successful weekend at BUCS Head with a Silver medal for the Women’s Intermediate Coxed Four.

The first division’s racing included women’s eights and men’s fours, with the Women’s First Eight finishing eighth but the division was highlighted by a fourth placed finish from the Intermediate Men’s Coxed Four, just 3.8 seconds away from a medal over the 5 kilometre course.

The second division included the men’s eight but was spearheaded by the Women’s Intermediate Coxed Four who won silver. Most of the lineup of Jess O’Dell, Emily Finch, Rosie Wilson, Gemma Collins and coxswain Alexandra Lennie are first year members of the GUBC Senior Squad, with only second-year O’Dell having been in the group twelve months ago.

GUBC have a successful weekend to close 2022 at Rutherford Head

NEWCASTLE – Glasgow University Boat Club ended the 2022 racing season the way they started it – with a trip to Newcastle for the Rutherford Head. The entry list was a who’s who of rowing within the north of Britain, with the notable addition of the University of London.

In the first division there were fourth and fifth placed finishes within categories, as the men’s eight finished fourteenth overall while the women raced in coxed fours.

The second division was roles reversed as it was the women’s turn to race the eight as they placed third in Band 2 and ninth overall, while the men’s first coxed four would win the Band 2 in their event.

Women’s Restricted 1 Coxed Four highlight weekend at Inverness Fours and Small Boats Head for GUBC

INVERNESS – Glasgow University Boat Club raced on the Caledonian Canal at the Caley Marina Fours/Quads and Small Boats Head, the largest head race in Scotland.

Thirty-nine GUBC crews raced down the course alongside more than 550 others.

Twelve crews recorded top-three finishes with the highlight of the weekend coming from the Women’s Restricted 1 Coxed Four who won their event.

GUBC open campaign with fastest times on home water

GLASGOW – Glasgow University Boat Club started the season on home water at the Clyde Three Seas this weekend, winning a number of events.

In the first division of racing, the men’s eight set a course record over the 3 kilometre course on the Clyde, while the women’s eight too set a strong time to win their event.

In the second division, the men’s coxed fours went one-two, while the pair of Xander Beeson and Lachlan Mackinnon set a time in the pairs that would have been competitive in the doubles. The women’s come four were also the fastest in their event.

Glasgow University Boat Club have representation on first-ever GB Beach Sprints Team

SAUNDERSFOOT – On the south coast of Wales, Laura McKenzie represented Great Britain for the first time in the newest rowing discipline: Beach Sprints. Selected after her strong performance at the British Championships, she was name to the Mixed Quad sitting in the stroke seat.

After setting the fourth fastest time in the time trial, they were beaten by a Kiwi crew in the first side-by-side action who would go onto win the silver medal.

Former GUBC Beginner Maia Hely wins Bronze Medal at European Rowing U23 Championships

MECHELEN, BELGIUM – After a long season of trialling Maia Hely was selected to race for Team GB at the European Rowing U23 Championships. While there in her crew including athletes from Leander Club and Thames Rowing Club, coached by Sander Smulders of Thames Rowing Club.

In Belgium they finished third in their event, winning a bronze medal.

Maia started her rowing career at Glasgow University Boat Club in 2018, she won two events for Scotland in the summer of 2019 and has won multiple Championship Gold medals at BUCS among other medals.

Laura McKenzie represents Glasgow University Boat Club at very first Home International Rowing Beach Sprints

ST ANDREWS – On the East Sands at St Andrews, the very first Home International Rowing Beach Sprints event took part and GUBC were well represented.

Laura McKenzie represented Scotland in the Women’s Solo as she swept through the field to win a gold medal for Scotland, defeating athletes from Ireland and Wales along the way.

GUBC Head Coach Iain Docwra was a team coach for the Scotland Team, as they won the team trophy on home water.

Seven GUBC athletes earn Scotland vests at London Docklands event

LONDON – In the shadow of London City Airport, the Home International Rowing Regatta took place, with Glasgow University Boat Club having seven representatives suit up for Team Scotland.

Laura McKenzie, the only GUBC member on the Sculling team raced in the double with Anna Buchanan of Edinburgh University, placing second before winning in the quadruple sculls joined by Lily Young and Perri McCluskey.

In the Women’s Sweep team, Maia Hely and Niamh Sheridan raced together in both the coxed four and the eight, finishing second and third respectively.

On the men’s side, GUBC had four representatives, Ethan Matthews and Xander Beeson raced in the coxed four and Lachlan MacKinnon was in the coxless four before they joined together in the eight, while Josh Thompson raced in the pair.

Development Coach Aaron Nicholson was also part of Team Scotland, acting as a coach.

A comfortable first round win as GUBC make their deepest run at Henley Royal since 2008

HENLEY-ON-THAMES – Glasgow University Boat Club were left as the last Scottish senior crew standing at the Henley Royal Regatta this week as the intermediate quadruple scull made it to Thursday in the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup.

In their first round they were drawn against a composite crew from Black Sheep and the University of the West of England, who they had faced previously at Marlow Regatta and again dealt with them comfortably, winning by a verdict of three and a half lengths.

In the second round, they were draw up against the much fancied Reading University ‘A’. While the GUBC crew put up a strong performance, they fell to the Reading quad by three and a half lengths.

Prince of Wales Challenge Cup

Strong performances for eight and quad set up promising Henley Royal Regatta campaign

WINDSOR – As they raced down the Olympic course, the Glasgow University Boat Club senior men gave good performances as they looked to set up the final preparations for Henley Royal Regatta.

The Marlow Regatta on Eton Dorney represents the final preparatory race for British Rowing’s showpiece event and the GUBC crew equipped themselves well.

In the eight, the Glasgow University crew performed well, finishing 5th in a very close E Final, while the highlight was the Quadruple Scull which made it to second place in the B Final.

Both crews will be looking to the Henley Stewards tomorrow to fin out if they have one enough to pre-qualify or whether they will need to go to the qualifying races on Friday.
