About Us

Who are we?

Established in 1867, Glasgow University Boat Club is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the university – we are also one of the largest! Following a historic union with the Ladies Boat Club in 2004, today’s GUBC was born. As the only club at the university to be privileged to receive full-time professional coaching staff, the club provides rowers and coxswains with a friendly, competitive, and driven environment to train and compete in.

Who are we?

The club welcomes new rowers both experienced and totally new to the sport. For newcomers we have an excellent novice coaching program – most of out biggest achievers learned to row at GUBC! Our novices have had great success in the last few years with several Scottish Champions and a bronze medal at BUCS regatta last year. If you are looking for a unique and fun way to get fit and make friends come to our taster session in Fresher’s week or contact us.

For those with prior experience, we have large and thriving senior squads who are competing at the highest levels of university rowing and beyond are always keen to welcome new athletes. If you are interested in becoming a member of GUBC please contact your relevant squad captain.

What do we do?

Crews from GUBC regularly compete at Scottish and National events including Henley Women’s and Henley Royal Regattas; BUCS Regatta; Scottish Championships; WEHoRR and HoRR and GB National Championships. Members of the club regularly row for Scotland at the Home International Regatta and have previously represented GB at the World Rowing U23 Championships.

The 2015/16 season saw Glasgow crews having one of their best seasons to date. Our women reached the final at Henley Women’s Regatta, won BUCS gold, and beat Edinburgh in the Glasgow vs. Edinburgh Boat Race.  While our men reached their first BUCS Championship Final in over 10 years, equaled the club’s best performance at the Head of the River Race in London and won the Scottish Universities Head. We also had a record number of athletes representing Scotland at the Home International Regatta, sending 12 rowers and 2 coxes.

Where are we?

Based in a large boathouse on Glasgow Green, a short walk from Glasgow’s City Centre, GUBC row on a 6km stretch of the River Clyde. Land training is conducted in our training space in the university gym, Studio 1.

The club also benefits from the Scottish Rowing Centre located a short drive down the motorway at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell. The park hosts a 2000m multi-lane international standard rowing lake, one of only 3 in the UK.
