Beginners Shine at First Regatta
Six overall wins for GUBC and Several more in the Student Events at season-opening Scottish Rowing Spring Regatta
MOTHERWELL – Coming off a large training block, Glasgow University Boat Club opened their campaign for the Regatta season at the Scottish Rowing Spring Regatta, which also contained the Scottish Student Sport Championships.
The first win of the weekend came in the Restricted 2 and Intermediate Single Scull, won by Robbie Waddellas he navigated a large field to open his campaign with a comfortable victory, several lengths ahead of the opposition.
For the senior women, they earned two victories in the SRSR event, the first of which came on Saturday when Gemma Collins and Kirsty McRobb defeated a strong pair from Aberdeen University in their final sprint to win the Open Women’s Pair, and with it the Championship SSS event. The second win for the senior women’s squad came on Sunday as they reigned victorious in the Restricted 1 Coxed Four.
But the stars of the weekend from GUBC came from the beginner squad. On the women’s side they won the Novice Four on Saturday before returning to win the beginner eight on Sunday to leave with two medals from their debut event. For the men there raced up a category in the eight, giving a strong performance but were runaway winners in the Novice coxed four.
The team will return to action next weekend as they travel south to Nottingham for the BUCS Regatta across Saturday, Sunday and Monday
