GUBC Men end head season with strong showing in challenging Tideway conditions
49th place for Glasgow University Boat Club First Eight at Head of the River Race
LONDON – As the south of England faced one of the wettest winters on record, the River Thames was filling up with a strength of stream unlike any seen before. In combination with a tide that had only been in green flag conditions for a matter of hours across the previous couple of months, it was prepared for peak speed for the first crews to race the course.
Waiting behind were a talented Glasgow crew, set off around three quarters of an hour after the optimal conditions they were the 126th crew to start. After being granted an extended running room by the umpires, giving them a minute of clear water in front of them. They crew would begin the course from Mortlake to Putney.
Using all of this clear space and successfully navigating through four additional crews, the crew would post a time of 17:51.4, good enough for a top-fifty finish, despite being so far behind the best conditions.
In the second crew, including six rowers from the beginner squad, they would start event further down the draw in 279th and improve upon their bow number to place 237, despite limited training time as a crew.
Overall, these results show a group making the best of a bad hand and will produce a hunger to improve for the Regatta season.
