Boat Club Close Autumn Slate with Flurry of Wins at Snowy Rutherford Head
Glasgow University Boat Club win five events at prestigious Newcastle race.
NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE – It was a cold but successful Saturday for Glasgow University Boat Club as twenty-seven tankards travelled back north as wins came from across genders and boat classes.
In the morning racing, it was the Men’s Eight who lead the charge up the time sheets for Glasgow. Seeded twenty-seventh and racing in band three, the boat would set the eight fastest time of the morning, beating all the crews in their band as well as the next band up – staking a claim to a seat of the top table of rowing within the North of Britain.
It was not just the men succeeding as the Women’s Coxed Four containing women’s captain Jess O’Del and steered by Alexandra Lennie gave perhaps the best performance of the weekend placing fastest of all the coxed fours that morning against some of the top rowing programs at this end of the country.
The success in division one didn’t stop there as the Women’s Quadruple Scull stroked by Maisie Archer Dytch, raced in the band two category against a strong field, took victory in that event by a margin of more than 22 seconds.
Victories continued in the afternoon’s racing with glory for the Men’s Coxed Four as they would win band three, but the highlight of the afternoon came from Matthew Hughson, Itay Yekutieli, Andrew Gorrie, Robbie Waddell who posted the fastest time of all of the Men’s Quadruple Sculls that day to take home the prize in the afternoon’s racing.
Head Coach Chris Rae said: “Pretty pleased with the progress that we’ve made. We’ve had pretty good results across the board. We’re in a really good place for the new year and the head season ahead. I’m sure the athletes will be grateful for some respite over Christmas.”
That ends the autumn racing for 2023 as athletes prepare for their end of semester exams, but training will continue for the BUCS Head back on this course on the weekend of 24-25 February 2024 when GUBC will return to racing action.
