Double Silver for Intermediate Fours as GUBC Shine at BUCS Head
Improvements across the board for the Glasgow University Boat Club boats on the Tyne
NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE – As the world of British University Rowing headed up to Newcastle, Glasgow left a strong mark on the course with a string of impressive results.
In the first division of racing there was possibly the performance of the weekend from the Open Intermediate Coxed Four as the Glasgow line-up of Sol Thomas, Philip Williams, Joe Flood, Ethan MacLachlan steered by Alex Sneader went down the course in a time of 15:44.0 to claim their first ever BUCS medals.
Also racing in the first division wat the Women’s Intermediate Eight who managed to navigate through significant traffic on their course to finish just 3.2 seconds off the podium and almost 35 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack to finish in fourth place in the event.
In the afternoon’s racing, it was the Women’s Intermediate Four’s time to shine as the lineup of Rosie Wilson, Gemma Collins, Kirsty McRobb, Laura McKenzie and Alexandra Lennie who won another silver medal to match the men’s performance. Finishing just 2.1 seconds behind the Surrey crew who won the event, this will provide a good platform to launch from for the rest of the season. Other notable results in this division came from Men’s Intermediate Eight who battled illness to place seventh out of thirty-three and the Women’s Intermediate Quad who placed twelfth in. their very competitive event.
In Sunday’s Beginner racing, many of GUBC’s newest rowers were able to get good quality racing experience. Particularly promising results came in the Eights as the women placed eight and the men managed a top-five finish. Both of these results represent some of Glasgow’s best results from a beginner group at BUCS Head in recent years.
