GlasGOLD for Scotland as 8 GUBC Athletes bring home 11 International Gold Medals.
After the term had ended and the majority of our athletes had headed home for summer, 8 of our performances athletes have stayed in Glasgow in pursuit of victory for their country. July has delivered huge success for 3 Senior Women and Senior Men after they were selected to represent Scotland at Home International Regatta. Taking place at Strathclyde Park this year the annual regatta sees the home nations put forward their best combination of crews to race for both individual wins and points towards an over all leader board.
The day started well for our Glasgow athletes with the Men’s Lightweight Pair of Ethan Matthews and Duarte Menezes storming to a convincing win. The boys were ecstatic with the result and will continue to work in pursuit of success at European Universities later this year.
Following this success, Catriona Scott was featured in the Women’s Coxed Four which again won against the English, Welsh and Irish crews by over a length after being down through the half way mark.
The Men’s Coxless Four was the next race down the course which featured Rory Young, Josh Thompson and Callum Young, all GUBC athletes. This crew had what was to be the most exhilarating race of the day for spectators, which they won by 0.11 seconds.
Next up was the Women’s Coxless Four which featured both outgoing and incoming women’s captains, Niamh McClure and Maia Hely. The pair were joined by two athletes from St Andrews University and dominated their very strong field which featured athletes who had represented Great Britain on the world stage.
Finally in the penultimate race of the day the Senior Women’s Eight featuring Maia Hely, Niamh McClure and Catriona Scott stormed to victory ensuring that the Scottish Women won the Senior Title.
A special congratulations must be made to incoming Women’s Captain for 19/20 who only learned to row this year after joining us as a fresher this September. With an exceptional determination and support from our club this young athlete has excelled rapidly and we are very excited about her future development as an athlete.
Another mention must be made to Callum Young who was awarded captain of the Senior Men’s Scotland team. He took this huge honour with pride and drove the men’s team to win the overall senior men’s trophy.
We are incredibly proud of these athletes and their commitment to our programme and we are excited to see them return to Glasgow with 11 international gold medals.
These achievements would not be possible without the continued support of our Alumni and Sports Union Bursaries.
