Scottish Boat Race returns after COVID-enforced break
Historic boat race returns to action after two seasons interrupted by the pandemic
MOTHERWELL – The third-oldest rivalry in the sport resumed as the Scottish Boat Race took place for the first time since 2019 at Strathclyde Country Park.
Serving additionally as preparation for races later in the season, the event was raced over a 2000m buoyed course as opposed to the more traditional head-to-head racing on the River Clyde.
In both of the first eights races, Edinburgh came off the better, picking up simple victories there.
In the Beginner Men’s race, the crews race in coxed fours, and despite an early clash requiring a restart – Edinburgh and Glasgow raced closely down the course, with the east-coast crew eventually getting the better of the crew.
In the Beginner Women’s event – injury from the Edinburgh crew meant that there was no race in the eights – which had been racing closely all season – the Glasgow Beginner Women’s Eight raced as an exhibition crew alongside the Senior Women’s eights before splitting into fours to race the one Edinburgh Beginner Women’s crew. Ultimately it was Edinburgh who would complete their clean sweep of the day’s events.
