Pairs and Fours Highlight Successful Weekend for Boat Club at BUCS Regatta
Glasgow University Boat Club place eight boats in top ten at British University Championships
HOLME PIERREPONT, NOTTINGHAM – The Holiday weekend was a successful one for Glasgow University Boat Club as members across the club came home from Nottingham with great results to their name.
In the Saturday racing, the highlight for Glasgow came in the Women’s Intermediate Pair where the Crew of Rosie Wilson and Gemma Collins qualified though the Time Trials and the Semi Finals for the B Final. The first-year students gave a stellar performance to finish second in that final giving a final classification of eighth place against a field of 32 of the top rowers in the country.
On Sunday, the fours were the main attraction for Glasgow University as success came in multiple categories. In the Men’s Intermediate Coxed Four a strong crew was fielded which ranged in experience from Scottish Internationals to those with just eighteen months in the sport. This crew performed very well finishing less than a boat length away from a spot in the vaunted A Final and performed well in their subsequent round to place 9th in the country. In the Women’s Beginner Coxed Four, the crew placed twelfth in the Time Trial to squeeze into the AB Semi Finals before this crew that started rowing in September rose to the occasion in the side-by-side racing to make it to the A Final and place sixth in the country.
On the Holiday Monday, Glasgow finished strongly as it was the men’s turn in the pairs as the crew of first-year Ethan MacLachlan and PhD Student Rory Young combined to win the B Final of the Men’s Intermediate Pair placing them seventh overall in the category. In the Women’s Intermediate Coxed Four a very young crew came together to make the Semi Finals and place eleventh in the event.
After a strong performance in the sweep boats, it was the turn of the scullers to perform in the Men’s Intermediate Quadruple Sculls as in a field of 37 this crew with an international flair comprising a Scotsman, two Englishmen and an Israeli National Team member rounded off the weekend with another trip to the A Final as they posted a sixth-place finish.
It was also a very successful weekend for members of the Open Club. Xander Beeson and Matthew Hughson competing for Strathclyde picked up 7th and 5th placed finishes in the Men’s Intermediate Double Sculls and Men’s Intermediate Pair respectively. While for Glasgow Caledonian, Kirsty MacArthur and Abby Pringle placed 10th in the Women’s Intermediate Pair. In the Women’s Beginner Single Scull, it was Club member Elle Sutherland representing Glasgow Caledonian who finished 8th in the country.
Head Coach Chris Rae spoke on the squad’s performances last weekend stating, “I am very pleased with the positive performances across all the squads. With a relatively young group of athletes, it is exciting to get so many strong results at BUCS regatta and marks the beginning of an exciting few years building successes.”
The Boat Club now travel back home as they prepare for the second half of the regatta season with the Annual Scottish Boat Race taking place on the River Clyde on the 20th of May.
